Intranet regarded as the most valuable channel
Our sample regards the intranet as the most valuable internal communication channel followed by an email update or digest and manager cascade. The company magazine or newsletter is regarded as the least valuable of the six channels we asked about. The intranet and email update or digest are also the two most widely-available channels with over three-quarters of respondents having access to both.
Over a third strongly agree that their intranet is generally useful to them, much higher than the email update or digest which is the next highest. Less than 10% describe the online discussion forum in this way whilst 17% disagree or strongly disagree that their company magazine or newsletter is generally useful to them.
Those working in Financial Services regard the intranet and intranet-based channels such as video and online discussion forums as more useful than those working in other sectors though they derive the least value from the magazine or newsletter. Perceived value of most digital channels is highest in large private sector organisations though respondents in small private sector organisations derive more value from the magazine or newsletter.
There is a direct correlation between seniority in organisations and perceived value of channels with directors/senior managers regarding all channels as more useful than managers or staff. The extent to which channels are seen as useful varies less by age though the 16-25 bracket finds the magazine or newsletter and online discussion forum less useful than older colleagues.
